Waterfall enrichment

Waterfall enrichment is a B2B data pattern that queries multiple providers in sequence and stops at the first verified match, raising coverage from ~50% to 80%+.

By Hugo Dupont · 2 min read

Waterfall enrichment is a B2B data lookup pattern that queries multiple independent providers one after another for the same missing field, such as a work email, direct dial, or company attribute, and stops as soon as one returns a verified value. Every subsequent source is queried only for records that earlier sources failed to resolve.

Why single-source lookups fall short

No B2B database covers the entire market. Individual contact and firmographic vendors typically return verified data on 40 to 60 percent of an outbound prospect list, with blind spots skewed by geography, company size, and industry vertical. Because two vendors rarely share the exact same blind spots, chaining three to five complementary sources raises total list resolution to 80 percent or higher without paying every vendor for every row.

Core mechanics of a waterfall

A well-designed waterfall relies on three rules:

  1. Ordered cascade. High-coverage, low-cost sources run first so the majority of records resolve at the lowest unit price; expensive specialist sources sit at the bottom of the stack for hard-to-find edge cases.
  2. Inline verification. A candidate match is validated before the cascade stops. For email addresses, that means syntax, MX record, and SMTP verification checks so a stale or invalid address triggers the next source rather than ending the lookup early.
  3. Pay-on-success accounting. True waterfall economics depend on paying when a field is populated rather than paying a credit per attempt on misses.

Sequential vs parallel execution

  • Sequential waterfalls query providers strictly in order and halt on the first verified hit, minimizing per-lead spend at the cost of slightly longer run times on misses.
  • Parallel waterfalls query every configured provider simultaneously and merge the highest-confidence response, trading higher lookup spend for lower latency.
